Main roles and responsibilities of the Lead Member:

  • To take forward the Progress with Unity borough missions and council plan
  • To lead on a preventative approach tocrime, in partnership with Greater Manchester Police and wider partners
  • To fulfil our responsibilities under the Serious Violence Duty, by working in partnership to prevent and reduce serious violence within our communities
  • To lead on a preventative partnership approach to youth crime, reducing the number of young people entering the criminal justice system
  • To lead on a preventative approach to hate crime and promote inclusion in our borough
  • To lead on a neighbourhood-focused approach to crime prevention, utilising the strengths in local communities to prevent crime, strengthen communities and positively engage young people
  • To adopt an innovative and data-led approach to all crime prevention priorities, using data and insight to target the areas where the need is greatest
  • Alongside the portfolio holder for Police, Crime and Civil Contingencies, lead on delivering the priorities of the Greater Manchester ‘Standing Together’ Police and Crime Plan 2024-29
  • To lead on the preventative aspect of domestic abuse, reducing re-offending rates through working with partners and ensuring effective multi-agency working and forums are in place
  • Be a member of Community Safety Partnership board
  • Be a member of the building resilient communities sub-group
  • Be a member of the Youth Justice youth offending sub-group
  • Be a member of the youth offending team board
  • To stand in for the portfolio holder for Police, Crime and Civil Contingencies on Greater Manchester meetings as required.

Priorities for 2025/26

  • To drive forward the delivery of the Progress with Unity missions and council plan
  • Improve the application of data and insight to crime prevention, violence reduction and reducing youth offending and domestic abuse
  • Ensure crime prevention and improving community safety and feelings of safety is a central part of our new neighbourhood model
  • Support the ongoing work to tackle violence against women and girls
  • Continue to improve partnership working on crime prevention within the borough and within Greater Manchester.
