Roadworks bulletin

The aim of this bulletin is to give the public advance notice of roadworks in the Wigan Council area. The council recognises that roadworks can cause inconvenience and it is hoped that this information helps to minimise delays and other problems associated with the works.

This bulletin is updated weekly and every effort has been made to provide accurate and up-to-date information, but it is not intended to be a definitive list and cannot cater for works carried out at short notice. The council also reserves the right to make changes to the programme if emergencies arise.

For any emergency work that has a major impact on the road network, we aim to notify members of the public via Wigan Council's social media pages as soon as possible.

Emergency Works

  • Manchester Road, Leigh - There are currently emergency works being undertaken by United Utilities with temporary traffic signals in place. Works are expected to be completed by 5th August 2025.

Major Schemes

  • Mosley Common Road, Tyldesley - The Major projects team have an upcoming junction improvement scheme at the A580/A577 Mosley Common Road Junction to provide additional traffic lanes and crossing facilities.   • Kirkhall Lane, Leigh - The Major Projects team are constructing a new puffin crossing between the junctions of Globe Street and Newall Grove from 9th June 2025 to July 2025.   • Twist Lane, Leigh - The Major Projects team are constructing a new puffin crossing between the junctions of Welch Hill Street and Organ Street from June 2025 to July 2025. Multi-Way Signals will be in place throughout the works. For more information and FAQs please visit the Major Projects webpage
  • Atherleigh Way, Leigh - The Major Projects team are Widening and surfacing the grass verge between Windermere Grove and the signal-controlled crossing from July 2025 to August 2025. For more information and FAQs please visit the Major Projects webpage.

Road Closures

  • Rectory Lane, Standish will be closed at The Owls, Standish on 19th July 2025 to 10th August 2025 
  • Spring Road, Orrell will be closed adjacent to Old Springs Inn on 28th July 2025 to 1st August 2025
  • Park Road, Wigan will be closed at its junction with Barnsley Street to its junction with Delph Street on 30th July 2025 between the hours of 12:00 and 16:00 only
  • East Lancashire Road, Worsley will be closed at its junction with Chaddock Lane on 4th August 2025 to 10th August 2025 – The closure applies to the left turn lane only
  • Cross Street, Hindley will be closed at its junction with Albert Street, Hindley on 5th August 2025 between the hours of 09:30 and 15:30 only
  • Darlington Street East, Wigan will be closed at its junction with Rupert Street on 10th August 2025 between the hours of 09:00 and 15:00 only
  • Bag Lane, Atherton will be closed at its junction with Market Street on 5th October 2025 
  • Cross Street, Hindley will be closed at its junction with Wigan Road (one-way only entering Cross Street from Wigan Road) on 6th October 2025 to 10th October 2025.

Events

  • Wigan Pride - A number of roads in the town centre will be closed on Saturday 16th August 2025 in support of Wigan Pride.
