The aim of this bulletin is to give the public advance notice of roadworks in the Wigan Council area. The council recognises that roadworks can cause inconvenience and it is hoped that this information helps to minimise delays and other problems associated with the works.
This bulletin is updated weekly and every effort has been made to provide accurate and up-to-date information, but it is not intended to be a definitive list and cannot cater for works carried out at short notice. The council also reserves the right to make changes to the programme if emergencies arise.
For any emergency work that has a major impact on the road network, we aim to notify members of the public via Wigan Council's social media pages as soon as possible.

- Atherleigh Way, Leigh - Following a recent inspection of Country Park Bridge, Atherleigh Way, damage has been found in the expansion joints and the top part of the ballast wall (including the nib). Because of this, it’s been recommended that these parts be rebuilt. The work will be carried out in two stages, starting on Tuesday 26th August 2025, and is expected to last around four months. Temporary two-way signals will be in place, allowing repairs to be done on one half of the bridge at a time. Once the first half is complete, traffic will be switched over so the other side can be repaired. The work will include:
- Setting up traffic management
- Removing the road surface and joints
- Excavating behind the bridge supports
- Removing the drainage layer behind the wall
- Using high-pressure water (hydro-demolition) to remove damaged concrete
- Rebuilding the top of the wall and nib
- Installing new joints and waterproofing
- Reinstating the drainage
- Backfilling and resurfacing the road with new markings.
We understand these works may cause delays, but they are essential to avoid a full bridge closure. Your patience during this time is greatly appreciated. If you have any concerns, please contact Network management.
