The aim of this bulletin is to give the public advance notice of roadworks in the Wigan Council area. The council recognises that roadworks can cause inconvenience and it is hoped that this information helps to minimise delays and other problems associated with the works.
This bulletin is updated weekly and every effort has been made to provide accurate and up-to-date information, but it is not intended to be a definitive list and cannot cater for works carried out at short notice. The council also reserves the right to make changes to the programme if emergencies arise.
For any emergency work that has a major impact on the road network, we aim to notify members of the public via Wigan Council's social media pages as soon as possible.
Emergency Works
- Atherton Road, Hindley Green - There are currently emergency works being undertaken by United Utilities with temporary traffic signals in place. Works are expected to be completed by 06th May 2025.
Major Schemes
- St Helens Road, Leigh Cycleway Scheme - The Major Projects Team will be constructing segregated cycleway on St Helens Road, Leigh. Works will commence on 30th September 2024 and is scheduled for completion in June 2025. The one way closure will be removed from 11th April and temporary traffic lights will be in use for the duration of the scheme. For more information and FAQs please visit the Major Projects Webpage
- Wigan Road, Standish - Cadent Gas will be undertaking gas mains replacement works wit hthe use of temporary 2-Way Signals. This involves replacing the exisiting Steel Gas Main with New PE Plastic Mains for health and safety reasons. The scheme will be replacing 3000 meters of Gas Main alongside 224 associated connections and services. Works start on 03rd February 2025 and are due to conclude in May 2025. - Mosley Common Road, Tyldesley - The Major projects team have an upcoming junction improvement scheme at the A580/A577 Mosley Common Road Junction to provide additional traffic lanes and crossing facilities. Work will start on 14th April 2025 for 14 Weeks, with an 11 week closure of Mosley Common Road between Ashdown Drive and the A580 Junction. Resurfacing
- Wigan Road, Atherton at the Talbot Roundabout (inc Gadbury Fold Junction) will be closed on 6th May 2025 to 10th May 2025 between the hours of 19:00 and 05:00 only
- Scholes, Wigan will be closed from its junction with Greenough Street to its junction with Great Acre on consecutive Sundays on 11th May 2025 and 18th May 2025
- Southgate, Wigan will be closed from its junction with Pottery Terrace to its junction with Ormskirk Road on 12th May 2025 to 14th May 2025 between the hours of 19:00 and 05:00 only
- Manchester Road, Ince will be closed from Entrance to Walmsley Park to Lighting Column No.48 on 15th May 2025 to 17th May 2025 between the hours of 19:00 and 05:00 only
- School Lane, Standish will be closed from its junction with Green Lane to outside house number 65 on 10th June 2025 between the hours of 19:00 and 23:00 only
- Preston Road, Standish will be closed at its junction with High Street and Market Street on 10th June 2025 to 11th June 2025 between the hours of 22:00 and 06:00 only
- Bryn Road, Ashton in Makerfield will be closed from its junction with Wigan Road to its junction with Nicol Mere Drive on 30th June 2025 to 2nd July 2025 between the hours of 09:30 and 15:00 only.

- Wallgate, Wigan will be closed at the Railway Bridge on 28th April 2025 to 2nd May 2025 between the hours of 22:00 and 5:00
- Shuttle Street, Tyldesley will be closed outside House Number 183 on 12th May 2025 between the hours of 19:00 and 23:00 only
- Woodhouse Lane, Wigan will be closed at its junction with Whitworth Way on 15th May 2024 between the hours of 19:00 and 22:00 only
- Winstanley Road, Ashton in Makerfield will be closed at the St Helen’s Borough Boundary on 21st May 2025 between the hours of 09:30 and 15:30 only
- Wigan Road, Standish will be closed at its junction with Greenways, Standish on 9th June 2025 between the hours of 19:00 and 23:00 only
- Leigh Road, Atherton will be closed from the junction of Lovers Lane to the junction of Riley Street on 14th June 2025 to 15th June 2025
- Darlington Street, Wigan will be closed at its junction with Chapel Lane (Ahead/Right Turn Lane Only) on 21st June 2025 to 22nd June 2025
- Freckleton Street, Wigan will be closed outside Freckleton Street Car Park on 23rd June 2025 to 27th June 2025
- Walthew House Lane, Wigan will be closed at its junction with Challenge Way on 23rd June 2025 to 6th July 2025
- Kirkhall Lane, Leigh will be closed outside House Number 78 on 16th July 2025 to 17th July 2025 between the hours of 19:00 and 04:00 only
- Rectory Lane, Standish will be closed at The Owls, Standish on 19th July 2025 to 10th August 2025
- East Lancashire Road, Worsley will be closed at its junction with Chaddock Lane on 4th August 2025 to 10th August 2025 – The closure applies to the left turn lane only
- Cross Street, Hindley will be closed at its junction with Albert Street, Hindley on 5th August 2025 between the hours of 09:30 and 15:30 only
- Darlington Street East, Wigan will be closed at its junction with Rupert Street on 10th August 2025 between the hours of 09:00 and 15:00 only.
