Memory Walk 2024

Join us as we walk for a world without dementia.

Our Memory Walks have been bringing people together as a community for more than a decade, to raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.

This year we’re excited to be heading to a brand-new venue!

As well as our regular event at Haigh Woodland Park in September (watch out for more details later this year), we’ll be connecting with nature at the fabulous Pennington Flash!

  • When? Sunday 9th June 2024
  • Where? Pennington Flash Nature Reserve, Leigh
  • Start time - 11am

Choose from:

  • A short accessible walk (approx. 20 mins)
  • A 5km/3.1 mile walk around Pennington Flash (approx. 45-60 mins)

How to get involved

The Memory Walk is free to join.

You can register to take part online or in person on the day.

Everybody who registers in advance will be guaranteed a certificate of completion to be collected on the day of the walk.

You don’t have to give money or raise funds via sponsorship, although all donations are greatly appreciated. Make a donation (external link).

Anyone who registers and makes a donation of £10 or more will also receive a branded tote bag as a special thank you.

What is the Memory Walk?

There are more than 940,000 people living with dementia in the UK and we can all do our bit to help.

The idea of the Wigan Borough Memory Walk is to bring people together as a community to raise awareness and funds - with every penny donated to the Alzheimer’s Society.

It’s also an opportunity for those whose lives have been touched by dementia to share happy memories of friends and loved ones who may no longer be with us.

Our Memory Walks are for everyone - no matter your age or level of activity.

You will have the option of taking part in a short, accessible stroll that anyone can enjoy or a longer, more challenging route for those who fancy going the extra mile. Both walks follow signposted routes, with walk leaders offering support.

Whichever you choose, the emphasis is on fun, having a friendly chat and enjoying ourselves in our beautiful green spaces.

Why we're walking

Haigh Woodland Park – save the date!

On Sunday 22 September 2024 (11am), we will be returning to Haigh Woodland Park for our second Memory Walk event of the year.

Again you’ll be able to choose from two options:

  • A short accessible walk around the park (approx. 20 mins)
  • A 3km/2 mile walk around the surrounding area (approx. 60 mins)

Keep an eye on the Wigan Council and Be Well Wigan social media channels for more details later in the year.
