A new Wigan Council initiative will help bridge the digital divide and support more residents to get online and stay connected.
The Access for All programme will deliver hundreds of devices, including laptops, alongside data connectivity and tailored skills support, empowering people to build confidence and independence online.
Community groups and organisations will be invited to refer eligible residents into the scheme.
Set to be launched next week, week commencing December 15, Access for All will build on the success of the Digital Communities Partnership and Digital Wigan’s flagship TechMates scheme.
It is being delivered with support from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) through its Digital Inclusion Innovation Fund.
Councillor Nazia Rehman, cabinet portfolio holder for resources, finance and transformation, said: “We are committed to helping our residents have the digital skills and confidence to thrive.
“Whether it’s accessing services, education or opportunities, or staying connected with friends, family and your community, digital inclusion is so important.
“Initiatives like Access for All will make a big difference to those who face barriers to digital inclusion, and we’re excited to be launching it on top of another successful year for our TechMates and tablet lending library schemes.”
Local organisations and professionals are invited to work in partnership by referring adults to Access for All, where an initial allocation of devices is available to support digital inclusion.
This is not means-tested, but recipients must meet eligibility criteria to ensure support reaches those most in need.
TechMates is Wigan Council’s flagship and award-winning digital inclusion scheme. Dedicated teams host outreach events across the borough to promote digital skills and confidence.
Meanwhile, the team has also recently launched new DigiDens in the borough’s Family Hub sites, bolstering the digital inclusion offer.
Coun Rehman added: “DigiDens are helping residents stay connected in community spaces where they feel comfortable and supported.”
