Over the past few months, Eldervale Sheltered Accommodation Scheme has been home to a monthly TechMates Tea Party that’s been quietly making a big difference. As the first regularly running TechMates session in a sheltered scheme, it has become a valued space for connection, confidence and digital support. The initiative came about thanks to Jacqui Gambles from the Tenant Voice and Engagement Team, who introduced Digital Wigan to Jo from Friends of Eldervale, sparking the collaboration that brought the sessions to life.

Led by the Digital Wigan team, the tea parties give residents the chance to enjoy a cuppa while getting help with phones, laptops, emails and smart devices in a relaxed, welcoming setting. In October, the team took the idea a step further by inviting residents from Greenfields, another local sheltered scheme, to join the session. Unsure what to expect, the team were delighted when the afternoon turned into something truly special.

The room was filled with conversation, laughter and shared stories as residents from both schemes mixed, supported one another and formed new friendships. Tech questions ranged from sending emails and managing contacts to using Alexa for reminders and music. While volunteers were on hand, many residents helped each other, creating a real sense of shared learning. “It was one of those sessions where you could feel the warmth and joy in the room,” said Sam from the Digital Wigan team. Jo from Friends of Eldervale added, “It wasn’t just about tech – it was about people coming together.”

The session was a great example of the Digital Community Partnership in action, bringing together residents who may otherwise face digital and social exclusion. It showed that TechMates is about far more than digital skills – it’s a catalyst for inclusion, confidence and community, with similar collaborations planned for the future.
