Children and families at Mornington Road Family Hub enjoyed a fun and creative introduction to digital skills this Easter, thanks to an Easter-themed Code Club session delivered by the Digital Communities Team at the Digi Den.

The session offered a hands-on and accessible way for young people to explore coding, while spending quality time learning together as a family. It was made possible through a combination of Better Connected community funding, delivered by the Tenant Voice and Engagement Team, and Strengthening Communities funding, which together ensured the event was welcoming, well-resourced and inclusive.

Two sets of brothers attended the session with their parents, creating a friendly and collaborative atmosphere. Although the children had different levels of coding experience, each one was able to get involved, explore ideas and support one another. Using BBC Micro:bits - small programmable devices ideal for introducing coding concepts — the children experimented with block-based coding, created animations and patterns, and developed simple games through playful problem-solving.

The session was supported by Zoe and Sam from the Digital Communities Team, alongside volunteer Kankan, whose enthusiasm and one-to-one guidance helped the children feel confident trying something new. Snacks were available throughout the session thanks to Better Connected funding, helping to keep energy levels up, and each child was able to take their own Micro:bit home to continue learning beyond the event.

Strengthening Communities funding played a vital role by providing the base kits, equipment and resources needed to deliver a high-quality session. Together, the funding streams removed barriers to participation and ensured families had access to the right tools to make the experience both enjoyable and impactful.

Parents and children shared very positive feedback, describing the session as engaging, fun and a great opportunity to explore digital skills together. Families were also encouraged to stay connected by attending the monthly Code Club sessions at the Digi Den, helping to build ongoing digital confidence within the community.

Micro:bit Magic at Mornington Road Family Hub highlights the impact of community-focused digital learning and strong cross-team collaboration. By bringing together targeted funding, dedicated staff support and accessible technology, the session provided a strong model for future Code Club events across the borough and demonstrated how digital skills can be introduced in a positive, inclusive and inspiring way.
