Restoration of Haigh Hall approved
Wigan Council’s planning committee has approved plans to transform the Grade II* listed Haigh Hall into a nationally significant arts, culture and heritage destination, creating a world‑class visitor experience for residents and visitors alike.
Submitted in Autumn 2025, the application sets out a comprehensive, sensitive restoration of the Hall to transform it into a multi use space.
Work will now begin to sensitively restore and reimagine the landmark building, including the creation of vast new gallery spaces that will host an ambitious programme of exhibitions and cultural activity as the project progresses.
The plans include an education hub on the ground floor, offering dedicated space for learning, workshops and community engagement. Flexible events spaces will also be developed to support a wide range of cultural, heritage and commercial uses.
New floor plans show a cafe, which will also operate as a restaurant, located on the ground floor, alongside a rooftop bar and terrace providing panoramic views across the estate. A gift shop will further enhance the visitor offer. Beyond the Hall itself, a new energy centre will support sustainability goals, while improvements to the car park and wider landscaping will enhance the visitor experience.
Alongside planning permission, listed building consent was also granted, enabling the Grade II* listed building to be restored.
Internal works will begin in the Summer alongside the tender process for a hospitality partner.
The restoration is funded through £20m from the Government’s Local Regeneration Fund with Wigan Council contributing over £25m to deliver the scheme.
