A Computer, A Connection, A Change: Access for All

Wigan Council’s Access for All programme, funded by the DSIT Digital Inclusion Innovation Fund, has been making a real difference in Wigan by enabling us to gift refurbished devices, partnered with connectivity and skills support, to residents who need them most. These device gifting packs are more than just technology – they’re lifelines to education, employment, and independence.

Empowering Job Seekers

John’s story stands out. After overcoming significant personal challenges, he’s now determined to find work. A gifted laptop means he can search and apply for jobs more effectively. It also allows him to join virtual meetings with essential services on a bigger screen, making those important conversations easier and more meaningful.

Supporting Learning and Inclusion

For residents like Katie and Susan, the devices open doors to education and volunteering. Katie plans to use her laptop to gain skills for community roles, while Susan is helping her autistic son complete assessments and attend Teams meetings with employability specialists. This support is crucial for his journey towards meaningful work.

Breaking Barriers for Health and Accessibility

A device was provided to a lady in a wheelchair who struggled to shop independently. With a device and internet connection, she can now order groceries online, restoring her autonomy and dignity.

Building Confidence and Future Opportunities

Pauline’s story is equally inspiring. After leaving her job due to ill health, she’s eager to return to work. Her new laptop enables her to engage with employability programmes, apply for roles and complete online courses to boost her skills.

Since the programme launch in December 2025, Access for All has seen over 250 devices gifted to residents in need across Wigan and Leigh.

These stories highlight the profound impact of digital inclusion and how a simple device can change lives – helping people learn, connect, and thrive.  Access for All is more than just a device – it's the springboard to a more prosperous digital future!
