Equipment and adaptations - maintenance, service and removal/collection

Equipment

The Integrated Community Equipment Store (ICES) provides thousands of pieces of equipment each year, ranging from walking sticks and frames to grabbers, bath hoists, shower chairs, and commodes.

All larger equipment items, such as bath hoists, mobile hoists, manual handling aids, and profiling beds, are routinely serviced to ensure they remain safe and fit for use.

Servicing of equipment

If you receive equipment that requires routine servicing, it will be added to Wigan Council’s service schedule. The Council has commissioned Drive Devilbiss to carry out annual servicing of mechanical equipment, including bath hoists, mobile hoists, and profiling beds.

Drive Devilbiss will contact you directly to arrange a suitable service date and time. Service dates should also be clearly marked on all equipment that requires regular maintenance/load testing.

Contact Drive Devilbiss Service on 0800 370234.

Requesting collection of equipment if no longer required

When any equipment is no longer needed, return it to us so we can loan it to someone else who needs it. Please contact ICES on 01942 486411 to arrange a suitable collection date and time.

Please DO NOT throw equipment away – think recycle, reuse and reduce waste.

All returned equipment is assessed, cleaned, and recycled for reuse wherever possible, to support other residents.

Adaptations

Wigan Council may provide a range of adaptations to a person’s home to help manage daily living tasks, assist caregivers in their role, or support mobility.

Certain adaptations require regular servicing and maintenance. These include ceiling track hoists, stairlifts, through the floor lifts, step lifts and specialist baths.

Servicing of adaptations

The responsibility for the service and maintenance of adaptations owned by Wigan Council (as listed above) under Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) or Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) lies with the Council. In Wigan, we adopt a good practice approach and as such, the Council also provides service and maintenance of adaptations in private properties installed through a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG).

Statutory inspections of adaptations

A routine inspection is completed by an independent competent company, Bureau Veritas (BV) following installation and at routine intervals, as required for all adaptations which fall under LOLER and PUWER provided by the service. These inspections are in addition to any service and maintenance arrangements in place.

Faulty adaptations

If you identify a fault or have any concerns about the safety of the adaptation installed via Wigan Council, follow the guidance below.

N.B. If the adaptation was purchased privately, it is your responsibility to repair or replace it.

Certain specialist adaptations such as stairlifts, through floor lifts, hoists etc. can be reused, refurbished, and/or recycled. It also speeds up installation ensuring residents receive safe and reliable support more quickly.
