New stars and a good reason to get on your bike

New stars and a good reason to get on your bike

Last month it was an honour to unveil the new Believe Star for Olympic athlete Keely Hodgkinson outside Leigh Town Hall.

Keely has placed our borough on the map in recent years and is an inspirational ambassador through her amazing sporting achievements.

We can’t wait to see what’s to come next in her career and thought it was fitting to see her star placed next to the star for her coaches from the Leigh Harriers; Joe and Margaret Galvin.

On the same day we also unveiled the Ella Toone pitch over in at William Fosters playing fields in my own ward of Ince – part of one of two football hubs due to open later this year.

Ella’s achievements with the Lionesses last year were another proud moment for our borough, especially with us playing host to the Euros tournament here in Leigh.

It is also worth noting that Ella has played her part in a number of big games at Leigh Sports Village with Manchester United in recent weeks and it is hugely exciting that the team has secured a place in the Women’s Champions League for the first time.

Looking back to a bit earlier in May, I would like to thank everyone who visited Leigh Civic Square to celebrate the King’s Coronation.

The sun shone and it was great to see so many families enjoying the activities and entertainment.

This week will see the council’s Be Well service celebrate World Bicycle Day (Saturday, June 3) with a special event at the LSV, leading into the Big Wigan Bike Week.

Throughout the day there are different activities and riding sessions for residents of all ages, including the free Leigh Bike Library session which allows residents to loan a bike and equipment for up to a month by signing up to the service.

You can also get your own bike checked over by our team to help ensure it is in a good condition.

There are also other fun cycling events planned throughout the next week including an organised ride from Leigh Spinners Mill to Salford Quays via the Bridgewater Canal.
