New gates have been installed at Mowpin Lodge after being fabricated at Wigan-based metal specialists, Lost Art.
The gates, at the Mowpin Lodge entrance to Haigh Hall, have been cast at Haigh Foundry by C&E Castings.
The design on the gates feature a miner’s shovel and pickaxe and was chosen by residents and designed by Wigan artists Al and Al.
Councillor David Molyneux MBE, Leader of Wigan Council, said: "It’s really good to see the gates back at Haigh with a new design that has been chosen by the people of Wigan borough. The gates are a piece of the redevelopment that is underway, we’re really excited to see it all take shape, we hope residents are too."
Marking 900 years of mining heritage at Haigh Hall, the gates, funded by Wigan Council, have been installed as part of the redevelopment of the site.
Councillor Chris Ready, Wigan Council’s cabinet portfolio holder for communities and neighbourhoods, said: "It’s amazing to see the vision on Mowpin Lodge gates come to life in line with the masterplan. The gates are a significant part of the rich heritage here at Haigh."
Haigh Hall and the surrounding woodland park is undergoing an exciting multi-million pound restoration programme. The masterplan will transform Haigh Hall into a nationally significant arts, culture and heritage destination providing a world class visitor experience. The works to the estate are funded by £20m from Levelling Up Funding and Wigan Council funding of around £21m.
