2,000 Life-Saving Health Checks Delivered in Wigan Through Groundbreaking Pilot

Wigan Council’s workplace health check pilot has reached over 2,000 residents, helping to detect early signs of serious illness and save lives.

In just six months, health teams from Wigan Council and community partner Health First have visited 48 local businesses from major employers like Sofology and the Heinz factory to small and micro enterprises, bringing vital health checks directly to the workplace.

The initiative, funded by the Government, has made a real difference by offering checks to employees of all ages, including those under 40 who wouldn’t normally be eligible for NHS Health Checks.

“These health checks can save lives,” said Councillor Keith Cunliffe, Portfolio Holder for Adult Social Care. “We’re proud to have worked with businesses across the borough to support our residents. Every check raises awareness of potentially life-threatening conditions and gives people the chance to act early.”

Launched in September 2024 and running through May 2025, the pilot aimed to make health screening more accessible and convenient. The checks are quick, simple, and non-invasive, taking just 20 minutes to measure weight, blood pressure, and discuss lifestyle habits with a health professional.

Despite 16 million people in the UK being eligible for NHS Health Checks, only around 40% currently take them up. Wigan’s proactive approach is helping to change that by removing barriers and bringing services to where people are.

The learning from this pilot will help shape future plans to expand access to health checks across the borough, ensuring even more residents can benefit.

Currently, NHS Health Checks are available every five years to most people aged 40 to 74 without pre-existing conditions. To learn more, visit NHS health check (external link).
