Health Column: Call to Boost MMR Protection

Health Column: Call to Boost MMR Protection

In Wigan Borough, we’re proud of our strong community spirit and looking out for each other is just what we do. As the summer holidays wind down and children get ready to head back to school, it’s the ideal moment to make sure they are protected against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR).

The return to classrooms means more close contact, shared spaces, and the usual spread of seasonal bugs. But measles, mumps, and rubella aren’t just ordinary childhood illnesses. They can cause serious complications like hearing loss, brain damage, and even death. Measles often begins with cold-like symptoms such as a high temperature, runny nose, sneezing, cough, and sore, red eyes. A few days later, small white spots may appear inside the mouth, followed by a blotchy rash that usually starts on the face and spreads. If you notice these signs, contact your GP and avoid contact with others to prevent spreading the virus.

Right now, Wigan Borough’s vaccination rates are below where they need to be. Around 88% of children have had both doses of the MMR vaccine by age five. To stop measles spreading and to keep our community  well, we need 95% of children to have had their two doses of the MMR vaccine.

With measles cases rising across the North West and the UK, now’s not the time to let our guard down. The good news is that getting vaccinated is simple, free, and available locally. Whether you’re a parent making sure your child is protected before term starts, or an adult who missed a dose years ago, there are plenty of options. You can book an appointment at your GP surgery and get it sorted before the school gates open by following these simple tips:

  • Check your child’s red book to see if both doses of the MMR vaccine have been given. If you don’t have a red book, check with your GP surgery
  • Call your GP practice to book an appointment many offer flexible slots during the summer holidays
  • Ask your GP about walk-in clinics or local pharmacy options if you need something quicker
  • Set a reminder on your phone or calendar: to follow up if you’re waiting for a callback
  • Don’t wait for symptoms, MMR vaccination is a safe way to protect yourself and your children. You will also be protected against mumps and rubella, which can also be very serious.

Vaccination isn’t just about protecting yourself. It’s about looking out for your community, just like we always do here in Wigan Borough. If you are unsure about having the vaccine, speak to your GP surgery. When you get the MMR vaccine, you’re helping to shield the most vulnerable among us, babies who are too young to be vaccinated, people with weakened immune systems, and those going through treatments such as chemotherapy. You’ll be protecting your child’s classmates, their teachers, and everyone they interact with. In a town like ours, where community means everything, getting vaccinated is one of the simplest ways to show you care.

If you’re unsure whether you or your child are up to date, check your red book or give your GP surgery a call. It’s never too late to catch up. Let’s keep Wigan Borough safe, strong, and healthy, especially as our children return to the classroom. For more information or help booking a vaccine, visit NHS vaccinations (external link).
