Haigh railway back on track as restoration works begin

The first pieces of track have been laid at Haigh Woodland Park’s railway, marking a milestone in its restoration.

Haigh staff joined volunteers from the Haigh Woodland Railway Supporters Association to carry out the work, which forms part of Wigan Council’s wider redevelopment of the site.

Councillor Chris Ready, Portfolio Holder for Communities said: “The work on the railway so far has been substantial, thanks to the hard work of volunteers and staff.

“It’s a huge part of Haigh’s heritage, I can’t wait until we’re stood here again welcoming visitors, old and new, onto the railway.”

The track laying follows significant groundwork including the removal of the old track, site clearance, levelling and drainage improvements.

It’s part of the councils £380,000 investment to bring the historic railway back into use, with a planned reopening in 2026 - the railway’s 40th anniversary.

The project also plays a role in the wider £20 million Haigh Woodland Park redevelopment, which includes restoration of Haigh Hall, Bothy Yard and cottages, the Kitchen and Walled Gardens, Plantation Gates, a new comet trail and a woodland hub.
