Civic square design

The Leigh Civic Square project is funded by the UK government. It will improve the public spaces and open areas in the historic town square. The aim is to create flexible and active spaces for cultural and community events.

Status

Initial ideas for the redevelopment were created for the original funding bid. After testing different options and talking to stakeholders, we agreed on design principles to guide the project.

Landscape Architects SLR Consultants have been appointed to develop detailed designs. They will work with key stakeholders, community groups, and access groups.

Consultation

Engagement with the community took place between September 2024, and December 2024 through:

  • Pop-up events
  • Community group drop-in events
  • Young people’s workshops
  • Online surveys.

This engagement was undertaken in two phases:

Phase 1: Understanding the current issues with the space, as well as gathering views on design and material preferences, and ideas on how to use the space.

Phase 2: Presenting a draft outline design and collecting community feedback.

Next steps

  • Detailed design completed early summer 2025
  • Contractor procured late summer 2025
  • Construction started autumn 2025
  • Leigh Civic Square completed summer 2026.
