A key aspect of our Transport Strategy is a commitment to help more people switch to Electric Vehicles (EVs) by expanding the charging network in the borough to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality.
This work across Greater Manchester is also described in Greater Manchester's EV charging strategy (external link). We have adopted this strategy.
In 2019, we declared a Climate Emergency and have committed to being carbon neutral by 2038. Further details of our commitment are provided in our Outline Climate Change Strategy.
Pilot Projects
We are committed to supporting the transition to electric vehicles. To help achieve this, we are investigating different charging technologies through EV charging pilot projects. We encourage residents to check this page regularly for updates on pilot projects that may be of interest.
Please note that pilot projects may have limited sign-up opportunities, may require signing a contract to participate and will be subject to meeting certain eligibility criteria.
Trojan Home Trial – EV charging for households without driveways
Residents are invited to join a trial of Trojan Energy’s Home EV charging solution, developed specifically for households without a driveway. Up to 50 households can join this trial on a first-come, first-served basis and subject to location suitability.
This innovative charging solution enables you to charge your EV directly from your home energy supply using a charging point installed flat and flush into the pavement outside your property.
What’s included in the trial?
- Free installation of a Trojan Home charging point on the pavement outside your home
- Charge your EV using your home energy tariff – enjoy lower costs compared to public charging
- No street clutter when not in use – the charging point sits flat and flush in the pavement
- Fixed subscription price of £50 per month for 36 months – includes equipment, maintenance, insurance, and 24/7 support from Trojan Energy.
The Trojan Home charging point can be used by other residents on a pay-as-you-go basis. ’Host’ households are fully reimbursed for any third-party use. In return, hosts can also charge at any other Trojan Energy charging point available within their local area. Trojan Energy limits the number of sharers per charging point, keeping the network accessible for the host.
To find out more, please visit the Trojan Energy website (external link) where you can complete an online form to register your interest.
Our commitment
In 2024, Greater Manchester Combined Authority was awarded £16m to provide on-street public charging points in Greater Manchester. We have been allocated approximately £2.5m of this to deliver EV charging points in the borough.
Currently, there are no on-street charge points available in the borough. However, using the funding mentioned above, we plan to install new charging points from 2026.
Do you live in the borough and do not have access to off-street parking? You can complete the online form to suggest a location where you think on-street EV charging points are needed.
Whilst we are not able to respond directly to every suggestion, the information that you provide will help us to understand where there might be future demand.
Charging at home
Charging an electric vehicle at home is often the easiest and cheapest option if you have off-street parking such as a driveway or garage. You do not need a licence for this, but please always make sure your charging arrangements accord with your EV manufacturer’s handbook and that cables do not cause any danger or obstruction.
You should not trail cables across the pavement, even if you have a protector. We do not allow the installation of channels or connections from lighting columns.
If you do not have access to off-street parking, you can charge your vehicle at public EV charging points within the borough.
Charging points around the borough
All of Greater Manchester’s publicly owned charging points are part of the Be.EV network.
There are other public charging points available at places like supermarkets and service stations.
Zapmap (external link) provides details about the locations and availability of public chargers within the borough. You can also calculate the costs of travelling in your EV (external link).
