What do I do in my role?
My role as a director of a SME involves overseeing the main operations of running the company by leading the management team with support, experience, guidance, combined with strategic decision making.
What’s my career journey?
After leaving school I obtained a job as an apprentice bricklayer, this provided me with a great insight into construction and I subsequently found my career path. I went back to college to further study construction management and at an early stage in my career was promoted into supervisory and contract management positions.
I realised that the knowledge I had gained from this steady upwards career route could assist me in setting up my own company and therefore, 25 years later we are now an established company within the Northwest social housing construction sector.
What’s the best thing about my job?
I really enjoy construction, seeing something develop from concept to reality is extremely rewarding, combined with great opportunities to meet fabulous people, within all sectors along the journey.

Good personal qualities to have
I have always been a person who gives their best, whether in work or outside of work, and to be proud of what you have achieved. If you find something you like doing, give it your best effort.
What do I want to do next?
My next challenge is to give back into the industry that I have had great enjoyment from.
I am still learning new skills and aiming to gain my master’s degree, followed by membership into the Construction Institute of Building. A goal I have always wanted to achieve.
My advice if you want to do what I did
If construction is the career you would like to take, the opportunities are endless with varying routes throughout the industry, find something you enjoy and be open to change paths along the way.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my career, it has given me opportunities to gain experience and gave me the ability, with confidence to start my own company.
