Mental wellbeing

Low mental wellbeing can have a negative impact on how we manage our long-term conditions as it can affect our energy and motivation to self-care. 1 in 4 people will experience low mood within their lifetime, however the risk of developing depression or low mood increases when we are living with a long-term condition.

Low mood can affect different aspects of our lives, it can affect our ability to sleep, lower our confidence, make us feel stressed, or stop us from enjoying our food. When we feel low, pain and tiredness can often feel worse as well.

Why good mental wellbeing is important

Our mental wellbeing is important because it influences not only how we think and feel about ourselves, but also how we think and feel about other people, affecting our outlook on a situation or the environment around us.

When we have good mental wellbeing we’re better able to:

  • Feel relatively confident in ourselves
  • Feel and express a range of emotions
  • Feel engaged with the world around us
  • Cope with the stresses of daily life
  • Manage times of change and uncertainty.
