Families at last year's Cycle Three Sisters event

Dates have been announced for this year’s free, family-friendly Cycle Three Sisters events.

The twice-yearly celebration of cycling returns to Ashton-in-Makerfield’s Three Sisters Circuit on Wednesday 6 May and Tuesday 4 August 2026.

Families from across the borough are invited to come along and enjoy a whole host of bike-based activities on and off the track, organised by the council’s Be Well leisure and wellbeing service.

As always there’ll be bikes available to borrow and ride around the course, plus balance bikes and cycle skills for children, adapted cycles for people with a range of disabilities, and other attractions such as a climbing wall, archery, giant bubbles and stalls.

Councillor Chris Ready, Wigan Council’s cabinet portfolio holder for communities and neighbourhoods, said: “We know how much residents love Cycle Three Sisters so we’re really excited to announce the event’s return for 2026.

“It’s always fantastic to see so many families having fun cycling together, and so many kids learning to ride and growing their confidence on two wheels.

“But the best thing about Cycle Three Sisters – apart from it being completely free – is that it’s truly inclusive, with bikes and helmets available to borrow for free and Wheels For All adapted cycles so everyone has the chance to get involved.

“It truly is an unmissable occasion, so make sure to save the date and come along for a ‘wheely’ good time!”

Around a thousand people are expected each day, calling in after school or – in the case of the August event – making it part of their plans for the school summer holidays.

Most activities get underway from 3pm, although from 1.30pm the track will be open to balance bikes, bikes with stabilisers and adapted bikes only; ideal for young children who need an adult to accompany them.

While balance bikes and bikes with stabilisers aren’t allowed on the main track beyond 3pm, there’ll be dedicated areas for them for the remainder of the day (8pm finish) as well as other entertainment.

Free parking is available on site but families who live locally are urged to walk or cycle to the event where possible.

Residents are also encouraged to bring their own bikes and helmets if they have them, though they will be available to borrow if needed.

The team from the Gearing Up Cycle Workshop will also be on hand to offer free bike maintenance and minor repairs.
