Creativity and confidence through digital inclusion

More Than Words CIC supports learners across Wigan Borough and is part of the Digital Communities Partnership. Their project gave learners the opportunity to explore photography, develop digital skills and showcase their creativity through a public exhibition at the Turnpike Gallery.

More Than Words had wanted to run a photography project for some time but did not have access to the technology needed to make it happen. This created a barrier for learners who could benefit from developing their creativity, confidence and digital skills.

Through the Digital Communities Partnership, Digital Wigan loaned iPads to More Than Words and provided the support needed to bring the project to life. Rather than focusing only on access to devices, the partnership created an opportunity for learners to use technology in a creative, meaningful and supportive way.

Learners explored their surroundings, experimented with photography and captured images reflecting their own perspectives. They developed new digital skills, discovered creative techniques and became more confident using technology independently. The project culminated in an exhibition at the Turnpike Gallery, where their work was professionally displayed for friends, family and visitors.

By loaning existing equipment and sharing support through the partnership, an idea that More Than Words could not deliver alone became possible. Without this approach, learners may not have had the same opportunity to access digital technology, develop new skills or exhibit their work in a public gallery.

This project shows that digital inclusion is about more than providing devices. It is about building trusted relationships and creating opportunities for people to develop confidence, express themselves and connect with others. A traditional approach may have focused only on access to technology, but relational working enabled learners to turn that access into creativity, achievement and pride. As Councillor Ready reflected: “This is what it’s all about; true partnership, working together for the benefit of our communities."
