Safety and privacy

Before you are able to start your volunteering with us, you'll be asked to sign a confidentiality agreement in relation to the safe keeping of data.

Privacy is important, please make sure you follow the guidance below when contacting your learners.

  • If you're telephoning your learner, make your calls anonymous by using *141 or 141 before the number. This may differ depending on your telephone provider. You can find out by searching the internet
  • Respect both your own and your learners' privacy - It's okay to have a chat, as this will help to prevent loneliness but please do not give out or ask for personal information. This not only protects them but also you.

What NOT to do

  • Discuss finances
  • Ask or give out personal details, this includes address, bank details and account passwords
  • Ask to meet your TechMate learner at your own or their home - if you would like to meet in person we recommend that you meet in a public space or visit a TechMate Tea Party. You can also talk to the TechMate coordinator about registering for a DBS certificate
  • Permit abusive language or activities
  • Engage in any inappropriate verbal or physical contact and inappropriate discussions
  • Take screen shots or photographs without your TechMate learner’s permission.

How to report concerns

You can report any concerns to your TechMate Co-ordinator. You have the right to terminate a call at any time or report any issues to your TechMate Co-ordinator.

We're here to support you!

Test your Knowledge...

  • Which numbers do you dial before the telephone number of your learner to make your call anonymous?
  • What should you do if you are unhappy about how a call is going?
