10 reasons working out is better together MAIN

Life is generally better when we’re together and that can go for exercise too.

Physical activity can be easier, more fun, and even more effective when somebody we know is along for the ride.

Here are 10 top reasons why it’s good to workout with a friend…

1. Stay connected

Modern life can come at you quick and with all our commitments it can be difficult to keep in contact with old friends sometimes. Working out together – whether it’s at the gym, the pool, or at a group ex class – means you stay in touch and have the chance to bond over a shared interest.

2. Get to know each other better

Your exercise buddy doesn’t have to be someone you’ve known for years; it could be a colleague from work, a relative’s partner or someone you’ve recently met. Going to the gym or a class together is an opportunity to build a new friendship over a shared interest – while also improving your health.

3. Motivation

It can be hard to keep pushing yourself when you’re feeling the strain but - just like The Beatles (or Joe Cocker, if you prefer) - we can all get by with a little help with our friends. Whether you’re supportive types encouraging each other on, or you love a bit of friendly rivalry, working out with a friend is a sure-fire way to boost your performance.

4. Keeping you consistent

Let’s be honest, when you’ve had a hard day the temptation to cancel your workout plans is real – but when someone else is counting on you to show up then you won’t want to let them down. Having regular plans with a pal will help you stick to your routine.

5. Have a breather

Rest and recovery after exercise is important and that includes resting between reps in the gym. Being with a buddy and taking it in turns to have a go on a single piece of equipment will ensure your muscles will get the recovery time they need without you getting bored.

6. Check your form

Sometimes it’s easier for another person to see when we’re not doing something quite right. Whether it’s your technique on a weights machine, your swimming stroke or your steps at dance class, your workout buddy can keep an eye on your form and make sure you’re on the right track – while you can return the favour.

7. Be more adventurous

Trying new things can be much easier with a friend. One of the most daunting things about group exercise can be that very first session when you’re in a room full of strangers, and while you’ll soon find your feet it can naturally be helpful to have that friendly face from the off. Why not take turns suggesting a new activity to try? You might just discover a new shared passion.

8. Be safer

Whether it’s someone to spot you when you’re lifting weights or having company when you go running at night or on a dark morning, being with a friend provides a safety net if something goes wrong.

9. Celebrate your wins

Maybe you’d like to reach a healthier weight, or achieve a goal like running a 10k? As well as keeping you motivated towards your target, exercising with a friend will allow you to celebrate your achievements and all the many milestones along the way.

10. Save money

Car sharing on the way to the leisure centre can save you petrol. Better yet, if you and your friend or relative happen to live at the same address, you can get Be Well’s Joint Membership and save on your monthly fee!

Are you a Be Well member? Refer a friend and you’ll each get a FREE month when they become a member too!
