Libraries offer for schools

Visit our Libraries

School classes are welcome to visit Libraries at any time, you can use our library spaces to deliver your class curriculum, borrow our books and read stories. Please let your local library know when you plan to visit.

Join your school class to the library to enable every child to borrow a book from the library. (Books must be kept at school and returned together).

Libraries also offer a ‘Class Introduction’ visit, this visit includes the following;

  • An introductory presentation of the library
  • A tour of the library
  • Collection of library cards for newly joined members
  • Time to browse the shelves and take a book out.

Children must join the library before the visit, please ask Parents/Guardians to fill out the online application form. If Parents and Guardians are unsure whether their children are already a member of the library, please contact your local library to find out first.

We have fifteen libraries across Wigan Borough. Find out your nearest location and contact details.

The Schools Library Collection

Access to the schools library collection is free to teachers working in Wigan borough schools. This collection of books is housed on site at Marsh Green Library.

By providing the service for free, we are ensuring that teachers and children have access to a wide range of books for use in the classroom.

Teachers can access the collection during Marsh Green Library opening hours.

What's available?

The schools’ library collection offers:

  • Free access to over 60,000 non-fiction and fiction books and resources, purchased with the National Curriculum in mind
  • Books and teacher resources for use in the classroom
  • Flexibility of choice and loan periods
  • No fines for books borrowed through the scheme.

Please be aware that access to the schools library collection is provided on a self-serve basis. On arrival, staff in Marsh Green Library can provide you with the membership card for your school (please bring proof of the school you work at e.g. school pass) and allow you access into the collection.

Books are available as pre-packed loans, or you can select directly from the shelves. The collection is mainly intended for use with Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupils.

Using the service

Access to the schools’ library collection is only possible during the opening hours of Marsh Green Library.

This is a self-service offer, so you will need to allow time to make your selections. To help make things easier, we have created instructions and a simplified floor plan of the space.

There is no charge for using the service and books can be borrowed for up to one year.
