Amberswood

Amberswood and Low Hall were created as a result of mining, but today are areas rich in wildlife and ready to be explored.

Amberswood is a 160 hectare nature reserve at the heart of Greenheart. The area consists of a series of small lakes, ponds, woodlands and wetlands, including a Site of Biological Importance. The area has many different environments to discover, from woodlands to wildflowers meadows, grasslands to wetlands. This mosaic of habitats support many birds, insects and mammals.

Today, over 6km of paths and part of the excellent Greenheart Jubilee Way run through Amberswood, so it is easy to get out and explore. It is also an excellent site for some outdoor exercise, Wigan Harriers host trail races on the site and a permanent orienteering course has been developed.

An outdoor classroom has been constructed in one of Amberswood's many blocks of woodland. This is open for the use of the 3 local primary schools; Ince St. Mary's CE Primary School, St Benedict's Catholic Primary School and St Peter's CE Primary School. Woodland totem sculptures have also been erected near the path entrance to the woodland classroom.

Many footpaths have been upgraded on the site including the main path around the lake. Further improvement works have taken place through Woodland Improvement Grants which Wigan Council has received from the Forestry Commission. Present public use includes dog walking, cycling, horse riding and as an area for recreational use.

Jubilee legacy walks

To celebrate the Queen's Jubilee Celebrations of 2012, a series of 15 Legacy Walks were developed ranging from 1 to 9 miles. Each walk in Wigan Borough's green space is recognised by Silver, Gold and Diamond accreditation.

Heart of Wigan walk

Each Heart of Wigan sculpture is the beginning of a one mile walk mapped out for you to enjoy and explore Amberswood.
