Ways to pay your rent

You can pay your rent in several ways.

Online

Paying your rent online is one of the quickest and safest ways to pay.

Direct Debit

The easiest way to pay your rent is by monthly Direct Debit. You can choose to pay weekly, fortnightly or monthly on either 5th, 14th, 21st or 28th of each month.

Complete the form, sign it and return it to us at the address printed on the form.

You will be sent a letter telling you the dates when the rent will be collected from your bank account and the amount due on each date.

Standing Order

If you have a bank account you can pay your rent by standing order. You must instruct your bank to make monthly/weekly payments to Wigan Council.

You can usually set up an instruction in branch, over the phone or online and you need to provide the unique 9-digit reference number for your rent account that begins with an '8'. You can find this on your rent statements.

Alternatively, you can:

Complete both parts, send the top copy to your bank and the bottom copy to us.

Telephone

  • Call the automated 24-hour line on 01942 489006
  • Alternatively speak to someone 01942 489005 (weekdays 8am-6pm, Saturdays 8am-12.30pm).

Please have your 9-digit payment reference number beginning with '8' to hand. We accept Mastercard, Visa and Maestro.

Post Office

Present your payment card or barcoded letter at any Post Office in the country. You can pay by cash, cheque or debit card. Cheques should be made payable to 'Post Office Ltd'. Some Post Offices do not accept payment by cheque.

Please keep your receipts as proof of payment.

PayPoint

Present your payment card or barcoded letter to any PayPoint outlet in the UK. You can pay by cash or debit card though some do not accept debit cards.

Please keep your receipts as proof of payment.

Life Centres

By credit and debit card only at one of the life centres:

Salary deductions

If you don't have a bank account and you find it inconvenient to the pay by any of the methods offered because of the hours you work, your employer may be prepared to deduct your rent from your wages and pay it direct to the council. Please contact us for further details.

Payment cards and bar codes

What should I do if the barcode letter or payment card is lost or stolen?

Don't worry. The card is a payment card only and would be useless should it fall into anyone else's hands. You can use the bar code printed on rent statements and letters.

  • Contact us to arrange for a letter with a bar code to be sent to you.

When will I get a new payment card?

We no longer issue payment cards. Please use the bar code on any letters we have sent you.
