Receiving direct payments

You can choose to receive your direct payment in 3 different ways:

Private direct payment

This provides the most choice and control as your personal budget is paid directly into a bank account used solely to manage your direct payment (this needs to be a current account with monthly bank statements). There are some exclusions for people with certain mental health conditions.

Supported direct payment

If you feel you cannot manage the money yourself, it may still be possible to have a direct payment paid to an appropriate person (e.g. family, your carer, friend or neighbour) for them to manage the money on your behalf. This person would be your nominee. Again, this needs to be a separate bank account.

Third-party direct payment managed account

If you would still like the choice and control over the support services you receive but would prefer not to hold the personal budget funds, you can access support from an external payroll provider who will hold your personal budget funds for you. Please note, you will still manage all aspects of the direct payment, and the payroll provider will make payments as instructed by you.

If your direct payment is being used to purchase equipment or for a one-off payment, you are not required to open a separate bank account.
