Taking time to reflect on wellbeing this autumn - Rachael Musgrave

September heralds the beginning of autumn. A time for cosy jumpers, getting outdoors to enjoy the autumnal changes and for togetherness and connection as we settle into new routines after the summer. It’s also when we come together to think about how we’re feeling during the Month of Hope. Bridging World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10 and World Mental Health Awareness Day on October 10, the Month of Hope encourages everyone to have open and honest conversations about how we’re feeling.

For many of us, 2023 has been an incredibly challenging time, just as the world began to feel more settled in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, new financial difficulties emerged. Month of Hope is therefore a helpful reminder to take time to reflect on our own wellbeing as well as the wellbeing of those around us, no matter what our situation is.

Our community has lots of amazing local groups whether you want to do something new, connect with other people or if you, or someone you know, needs support. No one should suffer alone and we should all feel we can ask for help when we need it.

We will be sharing details of what help is available and where to find it throughout the month, so be sure to follow Wigan Council on social media. We will also be hosting a series of Walks of Hope, each one themed around mindfulness, hope and mental wellbeing. These are free to take part in and are a great opportunity to get outside to enjoy all the beauty of autumn and to connect with other people.

Suicide is very tough subject for most people but you don’t have to be a healthcare professional to help someone who may be struggling with their feelings or wellbeing. Greater Manchester’s Shining a Light on Suicide campaign is offering free online training that gives participants the skills and confidence to talk to someone when they need it most and provides advice on how to start difficult conversations.

You can find out more about suicide prevention and the support available at Shining a Light on Suicide (external link).

No one should be afraid to ask for help. If you need to speak to someone, contact Samaritans - open 24 hours - by phoning 116 123.
