Staying well this winter - Rachael Musgrave

Staying well this winter - Rachael Musgrave

It’s that time of year again; longer nights, cosy jumpers and getting together with family and friends to celebrate. It’s also the time of year when illnesses spread quickly and easily so it’s important to make sure we’re all prepared to stay well this winter. There’s lots of simple things we can all do to keep well and protect our loved ones.

For the vast majority of us, winter illnesses are unpleasant and disruptive but usually harmless and only result in mild symptoms. But for those around us who are more vulnerable – whether it be pregnant women, the young, the elderly or people with pre-existing medical conditions – these illnesses can have life-changing consequences. Vaccination is our best defence against viruses, such as flu and Covid-19, offering protection for you and your loved ones. If you’re eligible both can be booked by simply contacting your GP surgery or through the NHS website.

As well as getting vaccinated, there are other ways to reduce your chances of picking up a winter illness. Handwashing is an easy and effective way to stop the spread of germs. If you do feel unwell make sure you get help if you need it and don’t go into your workplace until you are feeling better.

Keeping warm over the winter months can help to prevent colds, flu and more serious health problems such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and depression. We know that the cost-of-living crisis has impacted everyone and for many, this has made keeping homes warm over the winter a lot more challenging. Information about schemes that offer help and support can be found on the council’s Here For You webpage. We will also soon be announcing this year’s network of Warm Spaces - safe places you can visit to stay warm and see a friendly face, free of charge and without judgement. Last year we had 80 locations across the borough and welcomed over 4,000 visitors. Not only do the warm spaces offer you a place to stay warm if you are struggling but they will also be a place within the community to meet new people and talk to others about how you’re feeling.

By planning ahead and being prepared we can take care of ourselves and help each other over the coming months. If you do need support the Council, GP’s and pharmacies are here to help you stay well this winter.
