Family Hub 'DigiDens' make tech simple for Wigan Borough residents
An exciting new partnership is bringing digital support to the heart of communities across Wigan Borough.
Digital Wigan, the council’s digital inclusion team, has linked with local Family Hubs to launch new ‘DigiDens’ offering advice and support with tech and the internet.
DigiDens will be a welcoming space for residents to get online safely, build their digital confidence, and take part in fun activities and games.
Councillor Nazia Rehman, cabinet portfolio holder for finances, resources and transformation, said: “Our Family Hubs have been supporting residents across the borough since the first Hub opened in October 2023, making a real difference to families and communities in our towns. We’ve already seen more than 72,000 residents visit our existing Hubs in that time, and we’ve even more locations planned to launch soon.
“DigiDens will see Family Hubs offer even more, helping to make digital exclusion a thing of the past by providing a friendly face and welcome space for residents of all ages to grow their digital confidence, get online and stay connected.
“Access to digital devices and the online world is no longer a luxury but a necessity, and it’s becoming ever more important that people are confident and safe online - for everything from shopping and banking to keeping in touch with loved ones.
“DigiDens will help residents stay connected in community spaces where they feel comfortable and supported.”
Launched in collaboration with Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) and Good Things Foundation, DigiDens are the latest expansion of Digital Wigan’s efforts to tackle digital exclusion in Wigan Borough communities - building on successful initiatives such as TechMates and the tablet lending library.
The team have already supported more than 980 residents at 157 in-person sessions this year alone.
Each DigiDen will have its own unique offering, including things like devices to get online, gaming consoles and online safety advice. Eligible residents will also be able to access free data through the National Databank.
The first launches took place at Family Hub sites at Mornington Road and The Meadows last month, with the next grand opening event planned for the Family Hub at Formby Avenue on Wednesday 12 November from 3pm-6pm. DigiDens will also be rolled out at further sites over the coming months.
Resident Naomi, who attended the launch at The Meadows Family Hub, said: “I think the DigiDens are a brilliant idea and such a good thing to do. Lots of people in this area do struggle with technology and getting online, so it will benefit the local community a lot. Seeing all the children coming together, using laptops and enjoying gaming is absolutely fantastic!”
