Leading building and engineering company appointed to Haigh Hall restoration project

Haigh Hall October 2026

The transformation of Haigh Hall has reached another major milestone, with Wigan Council appointing Tilbury Douglas Construction Limited to help take forward the next phase of the historic building’s restoration.

The appointment will initially see Tilbury Douglas work alongside the Council and its specialist design team through the pre-construction phase, developing the detailed plans for the internal restoration of the Grade II* listed Hall alongside associated landscaping, car park improvements, and a new energy centre.

This important stage will see the project team work collaboratively to develop the design and programme, undertake further surveys and planning, and carefully consider the construction approach for the historic building ahead of the main restoration works.

Peter Hughes, Operations Director at Haigh Hall said: “This is another hugely important milestone in our journey to breathe new life into Haigh Hall and secure its future for generations to come.

"Haigh Hall means so much to people across our borough, and the appointment of Tilbury Douglas takes us into the next crucial stage of this exciting transformation.

"Our ambitions for Haigh are about much more than restoring this magnificent building. We want to create a destination that the whole borough can be proud of, while making sure the investment creates real opportunities for local people through jobs, skills and wider opportunities.”

The appointment also brings a strong commitment to delivering social value through the project.

Kabir Salihi, Regional Director at Tilbury Douglas, said: “We are delighted to be working with Wigan Council on the next stage of the transformation of Haigh Hall. This is an important heritage project, and we look forward to working collaboratively with the Council, design team and wider partners to develop the plans and help bring the vision for this remarkable building to life.

"We are also committed to ensuring the project delivers benefits beyond the restoration itself, creating opportunities for local people, developing skills and supporting businesses as work progresses.”

The restoration will see Haigh Hall transformed into a nationally significant arts, culture and heritage destination, while protecting and celebrating the historic character of one of the borough’s most treasured buildings and creating new reasons for residents and visitors to experience the Hall and wider estate.

The project forms a key part of the wider transformation underway at Haigh and supports Wigan Council’s Progress with Unity ambitions, creating opportunities for residents and businesses while investing in heritage, culture and the borough’s visitor economy.

Work will now continue through the pre-construction phase, with further updates on the restoration programme to be shared as the project progresses.
