Wigan Borough has highest adult social care rating in country

Wigan Council received an ‘outstanding’ rating for adult social care earlier this year, and it has now been confirmed that this was the highest rating across the entire country.

In a recent report to the council’s health and social care scrutiny committee, the authority confirmed its final score of 95 out of 100 which is the highest of all councils with adult social care responsibility in England.

Inspectors praised the way staff build relationships, listen deeply and work alongside residents, families and communities to help people live with independence, dignity and confidence.

Councillor Keith Cunliffe said: “To be recognised as outstanding is a tremendous achievement, but to receive the highest score in the country makes it even more special.

“This result belongs to everyone who plays a part in supporting adults across our borough. It reflects years of hard work, strong partnerships and a shared determination to help people live the best lives possible.”

The report highlights Wigan's strong person-centred culture, its willingness to embrace new ways of working and the strength of relationships between services, care providers, communities and residents.

Inspectors found that staff were encouraged to use their initiative, develop new approaches and focus on achieving the best outcomes for local people. They also noted the wide range of services available to help prevent or reduce the need for long-term care and support.

Councillor Cunliffe added: “We have created a culture where good people can do great things.

“Our staff bring compassion, skill and commitment to their work every day. They are supported to share ideas, challenge themselves and continually improve what we do for residents.

“While we are proud of this achievement, we know there is always more to do. We will continue building on this success and working with residents, carers, care providers, the NHS, community groups and voluntary organisations to deliver the best possible support.”
