Play investment keeps improvement plan moving forward

Communities across the borough have access to new and improved outdoor play equipment thanks to a £200k Wigan Council investment.

Wigan Council’s investment totals more than £220k, supplemented by around £180k from housing developer contributions.

The locations receiving new, accessible play equipment and facilities include Smiths Lane Bickershaw, Repton Avenue in Abram, Landgate in Bryn, Foggs Fold in Platt Bridge, Stubshaw Cross and York Street in Leigh.

Councillor Nazia Rehman, cabinet portfolio holder for finance, resources and transformation, said: “We have set out an improvement plan for play areas across our borough to ensure we provide quality, inclusive, accessible play provision for families, friends and communities to enjoy.

“We are delighted to see these projects progress throughout the past 12 months and look forward to seeing further projects in the next year.

“We remain committed to getting the best for our communities as a result of the developments across our borough and our plan ensures that we make the most out of these contributions.”

Developers are required to fund infrastructure including highways, education provision, and green space as part of house building schemes, called section 106 payments.

Our strategy and this investment really demonstrate the importance we place on providing high quality, safe and inclusive play equipment across our borough.”

The Smiths Lane, Repton Avenue, Landgate, Foggs Fold, Stubshaw Cross and York Street sites have all been completed with 8 other play areas due for completion later this year.

Each of the six sites has been funded by council or section 106 contributions, or a combination of both.
