Haigh Hall

19th century Wigan couples gather outside Haigh Hall

Haigh Hall and the surrounding woodland park is undergoing an exciting multi-million-pound restoration programme.

This masterplan will transform Haigh Hall into a nationally significant arts, culture and heritage destination providing a world class visitor experience.

Many of the projects are already well underway with exciting milestones on the horizon.

Lovingly described as the ‘Jewel in Wigan’s Crown’, Haigh Hall is close to the hearts of so many residents across Wigan Borough and we share their pride and passion for the site.

With a talented project team behind these wide-reaching plans, we are fully committed to delivering this important project for everyone.

As part of Wigan Council’s commitment to community wealth building and providing social value, the project is providing employment and training opportunities.

Many of these are in partnership with Wigan and Leigh College and the local business network, designed to give back to the local community and voluntary sector.

The Hall

External works on the hall were completed in Summer 2025.

The work completed includes, but is not limited to:

  • Stonework and windows repaired or replaced
  • Chimney pots repaired or replaced
  • Extensive roof works:
    • Restoration of the three historic glass domes
    • New slate roof throughout
    • Replacement of rotten timbers.
  • Light steam clean to the stonework to remove debris and staining
  • Drainage works
  • Replacement of ironworks.

All work was completed to preserve the heritage of the hall.

Interior transformation

The next phase for the hall is the interiors. A planning application was submitted in Autumn 2025 and is currently under review.

In that application are plans to transform the hall into:

  • A vast gallery space
  • An education hub
  • Flexible vents spaces.

Also in the plans are:

  • A cafe/restaurant
  • A rooftop bar and terrace
  • A gift shop
  • A new energy centre
  • Improvements to the car park and landscaping.

The works to the hall are funded by £20m from the Levelling Up Funding and Wigan Council funding of over £25m.

You can read more about the funding on our Haigh FAQ page.

The hall is expected to open its doors to the public in 2028.
