TechMates is a friendly digital support service run by Digital Wigan, designed to help people feel more confident using technology in everyday life. With the help of our amazing TechMate volunteers, we offer patient, judgement-free support for anyone who wants to learn, ask questions, or simply feel more comfortable with digital devices and online services.
Whether it’s a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or the internet, TechMates is here to help through our award-winning Tea Parties or 1 to 1 support.
TechMate Tea Parties
TechMate Tea Parties are friendly, relaxed get-togethers where you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee while getting help with everyday technology. There is no pressure, no expectations, and absolutely no such thing as a silly question. Whether you pop in for a quick chat or stay a while, you will find a welcoming space to learn, connect, and feel more confident with tech - all while meeting others in your local community.
Want to see what a Tea Party is really like? Check out the video below from our TechMate Tea Party at Leigh Library, where learners Christine and Irena even went on to publish their own books with support from our TechMate volunteers.

TechMate 1 to 1 support
If you’re unable to attend a TechMate Tea Party, or would rather have direct one-to-one support, we can arrange a session with one of our TechMate volunteers. This option is designed for those who are unable to make it to a Tea Party or who need help with something specific in a quieter, more personal setting.
You will speak directly with a TechMate volunteer to organise a suitable time, and sessions take place in public spaces such as libraries or community centres. Support is paced around you, with time to focus on the questions or tasks you would like help with.
To be connected with one of our TechMates all you need to do is complete our online form to get digital support (external link).
Volunteer to be a TechMate
As a TechMate, you will help transform the lives of some of the borough’s most in need residents, while adding something invaluable to your CV - including the chance to gain a Level 3 AQA qualification in TechMate volunteering!
