When and where
To celebrate Digitober 2024, Wigan Council hosted a series of events at Wigan Borough Libraries and community venues to explore the wonderful world of digital! The event dates were:
- Tech Time: On Tour (Tuesday 22nd October - Golborne Library)
- Tech Time: On Tour (Thursday 24th October – Higher Folds Community Centre)
- Tech Time: On Tour (Friday 25th October - Shevington Library)
- Tech Time: to get Digital! (Saturday 26th October - Leigh Library).
More Tech Time events will be delivered in 2025, and the dates for these will be detailed on this webpage when set.
What is Tech Time
Tech Time is an event framework which sees a range of free fun digital activities and
experiences become available to access. Alongside these activities/experiences, opportunities to find out about the great support services on offer across the borough - from council and community partners alike.
How to get involved
There is no need to pre-book, just note the timings of the sessions and turn up to join in the fun.
Event programme
Free activities for all the family include: 
- VR Experience – transport yourself to virtual worlds in the blink of an eye!
- Retro Gaming – an opportunity to have fun with the kids or reminisce about games of your past
- Coding club – a fun session introducing you to coding basics using BBC Micro:Bits
- Digital Art Workshop for children and families - explore your inner creativity with fun activities.
Digital skills and connectivity support
- TechMates Support - our fabulous award winning volunteers will be on hand for support and advice on basic digital skills. This is ideal for beginners
- Databank – information on the national databank will be available, which sees digitally excluded, eligible, individuals receive gifted data SIM packages to support them in accessing the internet
- Free WI-FI - at all the venues Tech Time is delivered from, we offer free connection for attendees to use.
Support services and partner organisations:
At our Tech Time events, we have Internal services and local organisations from across the borough available to answer questions about their services.
- Wigan Council’s Digital Services team - helping residents sign up to MyAccount and providing information on what can be accessed
- Wigan Adult Learning - showcasing the courses available to adults who want to learn more skills or move on in, or into employment
- Here for You – the income maximisation team will be on hand to help check whether you are entitled to any additional welfare or benefits support
- Community Link Workers - provides advice and support on many social issues that may be affecting your health and wellbeing. They have a wide range of knowledge on local services and community-based groups and activities
- The Carers Centre - a charity supporting unpaid carers who look after people living in the Wigan borough
- Henshaws charity - a charity supporting people living with sight loss and other disabilities
- ComputerXplorers – providing fun and engaging quality technology and computing education for children from the age of 3 to 16
- Darsebury Labs – pushing the boundaries of modern science and delivering enriching robotics, coding and digital activities
- Be Well Health and Wellbeing Support – providing confidential and non-judgemental advice and support on stopping smoking, healthy weight and nutrition, alcohol consumption, mental wellbeing and becoming more active
- Embrace Charity – charity dedicated to helping people with any type of disability and their families who live, work or use services primarily within the borough
- Higher Folds Community Centre – support for local residents via groups, community grocery and nursery service
- Freedom Fibre – working together to make full fibre, high speed broadband available to everyone
- Nigerian Community Wigan – supporting a vibrant community for Nigerians in the area while positively impacting on the Wigan Community.
