We have a number of newspapers on microfilm available at both Wigan and Leigh Local Studies departments.
Every year from 1852 when the Leigh Chronicle was first published to 1963 when the newspaper folded a diary of local events was created containing a list of notable events that had taken place that year. For example, on the 23 February 1866 in order to avoid contagion from foot and mouth, 26 head of cattle were lowered into a local coal mine!
