Paying our respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Paying our respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

The series of events over the past fortnight has been one that we were not expecting and I’m sure all of us will have been affected in some way by the news of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s passing.

The entire UK has been united in showing its respect for her decades of service and I would like to thank everyone across the borough who has contributed.

Our books of condolence – including one at Leigh Town Hall and library - have been well received and I know thousands of our residents will have tuned in to watch the funeral service on Monday.

It was a great honour to attend the state funeral at Westminster Abbey as a representative of our borough and be part of such an historic event.

Meanwhile, following their resounding victory over Batley Bulldogs last weekend, I would like to congratulate Leigh Centurions and everyone associated with the club for topping the Championship table at the end of the regular season.

It has already been an impressive season for Adrian Lam’s side and we wish them good luck for the play-offs and their efforts to return to Super League.

This month will see the council launch our cost-of-living support campaign called Here For You.

As usual, we will be linking up with our partners and community organisations to urge those who are struggling over the winter months to ask for help.

We know there a lot of pressures on residents at the moment and there’s no hiding that there is potentially worse to come.

But we also know that our borough has a great sense of community spirit and will react in the right way to adversity.

More details will be released soon, with all the advice, guidance and support detailed on our website.

September has also seen the launch of a fresh Love Local campaign to encourage everyone to visit the borough’s wide range of independent businesses.

Over the coming months our teams will be showcasing the great work of business owners, sharing their stories and displaying their range of products and services for customers.

Supporting local businesses is such an important and impactful thing that we can all do to make a difference in our communities.
