Nature Reserve news a boost for the borough

We had cause for celebration last week with the official unveiling of the new National Nature Reserve that covers large parts of our borough.

This formal declaration by Natural England ensures that 738 hectares of precious wetland habitats will be protected and known officially from now on as The Flashes of Wigan and Leigh.

These wetlands are home to a wide range of wildlife populations and were originally formed by the flooding of former coal mining sites.

We’re proud to be working alongside Natural England, Lancashire Wildlife Trust and Forestry England on this project and we’re delighted on the progress so far.

Like so many of our residents, we as a council are deeply passionate about the conservation of wildlife and about providing opportunities for local people to get closer to nature and explore the beauty of their surroundings.

This week marks the start of the Rugby League World Cup tournaments – a date we have been looking forward to for several years as a host venue.

Earlier this month we welcomed the Lebanon team and officials to the borough as they will be based here throughout the tournament and will play two group games at Leigh Sports Village.

A civic reception was held at Leigh Town Hall and we wish them the best of luck in their matches. Tickets remain available for the men’s, women’s and wheelchair tournament fixtures so please don’t miss out on this festival of rugby league.

I must also reserve a special mention for Leigh Centurions and everyone associated with the club. To cap off a highly successful 2022, the Centurions secured a well-deserved return to Super League, beating Batley Bulldogs in the Championship play-off final.

It has been a record year for sport across our borough and we’re proud of everything our teams and athletes have achieved.

My final mention is for everyone to check if they are eligible for flu vaccination to help protect themselves and their families as we approach the winter months.

Those who are eligible may also be offered a free Covid booster at the same time to top up their immunity with locations available across the borough at GP practices and pharmacies.

It’s easy to do so please book your vaccine today to help our local health services during the challenging winter season.

Check the eligibility criteria on the NHS website (external link).
