Leigh Market development plans progress
A timeline for Leigh Market Hall’s multi-million-pound redevelopment has been unveiled with works set to be underway in 2027.
The popular facility will remain fully operational until then with a temporary relocation for traders scheduled once work starts.
Funded by the government’s Levelling Up Fund, the refurbishment is focused on creating a more attractive environment and broadening what the market has to offer.
Feedback from a recent survey about the plans reaffirmed the view that the market is at the heart of the town, but investment is required to bring it up-to-date.
Councillor Keith Cunliffe, deputy leader of Wigan Council, said: “A huge thank you must be extended to the more than 1,500 people who took part in our recent survey, residents, visitors, businesses and traders.
“We all agree on the market’s crucial role, along with the need for it to offer even more to visitors and retaining its traditional feel.
“This revised timeline gives us further opportunity to work with traders and partners on the next steps and how to minimise disruption during the building phase.”
Trader representatives and stakeholders were informed of the new timeline and plans this week.
It is proposed that the market will be relocated to the nearby Doctor’s Nook car park, adjacent to Civic Square and the town hall.
Projects tabled as part of LUF have been handed an extension, providing the council with a further opportunity to consult with traders and the public.
It has also meant a more flexible timetable, continuing to protect the important Christmas season for traders.
The market hall requires significant works – particularly to the roof structure – with works predicted to be ongoing for the best part of a year.
Leigh and Atherton MP, Jo Platt, said: "It’s great to see a clear timeline in place. This gives our traders the certainty they need to plan ahead and keep doing what they do best.
"Leigh Market is the heart of the town, and I’m pleased to see investment that protects its character while securing its future.”
Coun Cunliffe added: “There will be lots more news and updates over the next 18 months and as works get underway.
“For now, remember Leigh Market is open and operational at Leigh Market Hall right now, and will be for the next 18 months.
Pop in, pick up your groceries for the week, grab a brew or bite to eat, and have a browse of the incredible range on offer and meet our fantastic traders.
