Jubilee celebrations will soon be here

It has been a busy period for elected members but now the election period has concluded for another year, the events and activities across the borough are coming thick and fast.

Before I mention some of these exciting things on the horizon, I would like to thank all residents who voted this year and also say thank you to the council staff who oversaw the operations in both the polling stations and counting venues.

We are now a fortnight away from the borough’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations – including the Mayor’s Gala in Pennington Hall Park on Friday, June 3.

We have gone the extra mile to help our communities make it a week to remember for everyone with an exciting events schedule and support for those hosting their own street parties.

In another boost, we also received confirmation recently that the Queen’s Baton will visit the borough as part of the build-up to the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The baton relay will span 2,500 miles and it’s brilliant that we are one of the destinations later this summer, another way we’re putting Wigan Borough on the map.

This week also saw us pass the 50 days to go milestone for the UEFA Women’s Euros, due to arrive in Leigh.

Since my last column, we now know that the Portugal team is part of the group playing at the LSV, meaning there are some quality match-ups along with, Sweden, Netherlands and Switzerland. Tickets for the matches are on sale now so please get them while you can.

You will also start to see lots of activity linked to the tournament’s arts and culture programme. Exhibitions, installations and events – many of which are based in Leigh – are approaching kick-off, so please keep an eye out.

I would like to mention that our new edition of Borough Life is now out for delivery. It is a special Jubilee edition with a pull-out that includes crafts and recipes for youngsters and also a touch of Royal nostalgia for the older generation.

There is also important information and advice and support services that are available across the borough.

We know that there are several things placing pressure on household bills at the current time so please take advantage of the advice, information and support that is available.
