Keep Yourself and Those Around You Safe This Christmas - Rachael Musgrave

We are just weeks away from Christmas Day; the time that many of us get together with friends and family, exchange gifts and enjoy a well-deserved break.

While it is traditionally a time of cheer, excitement and fun, this year will also be the first Christmas since the Covid-19 pandemic without any restrictions on how and where we mix. That means there are more winter illnesses circulating so it’s important that everyone checks they are up to date with winter vaccinations.

We are already seeing cases of flu beginning to rise and Covid-19 remains a risk. Our best tool in facing these viruses is vaccination. These quick jabs will ensure you are as protected as possible, while also helping to protect your loved ones. If you’re eligible both can be booked by simply contacting your GP surgery or through the NHS website.

With the weather getting colder now, keeping warm is an important part of staying healthy. Make sure to heat your home to at least 18 degrees and if you’re feeling the squeeze financially, now is a good time to check you are receiving all the help that you’re entitled to; there are grants, benefits and sources of advice available to make your home more energy efficient, improve your heating and help with bills.

If you are struggling with the rising cost of energy bills, we have also launched our warm, welcoming spaces in libraries, galleries, museums and more. You can visit these safe places to stay warm for free and see a friendly face. Each of our warm, welcoming spaces are slightly different in what they offer, but we promise that if you do visit, you’ll be met with warmth, kindness and a friendly Wigan Borough welcome.

As you take care of yourselves this winter, keep in mind others around you, such as older neighbours, friends and family members, who may be struggling whether that is due to loneliness, isolation or a medical condition. Often a simple knock at the door to check they are okay is a great help.

So, keep healthy this Christmas and I hope you all make the most of the festive season. We big plans for 2023 and we look forward to working with you all as we continue our journey toward a healthier, happier borough.
