Trees and woodlands which contribute to the local environment can be protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO). Trees in conservation areas have similar protection.

It is against the law to cut down or damage a protected tree.

You must give us notice if you plan to carry out any works to the following:

  • Trees or woodland covered by a TPO
  • Trees or woodland located in a conservation area (we must be given at least six weeks notice).

Works include pruning or removing a tree.

How do I know if a tree is protected?

You can find out if a tree or woodland is covered by a TPO or located in a conservation area by completing our online form. You can also contact us to request a copy of a TPO for conveyancing or ask us if a tree is council-owned.

How to tell us if you plan to carry out works

You must tell us if you plan to carry out works to trees covered by a TPO or located in a conservation area. To do this:
