Supported living
We support adults with learning disabilities in various types of accommodation in Wigan and Leigh.
As a support worker, you will be part of a team supporting people within their own homes and offering support with everyday life skills and activities. The people we support have varying levels of support needs, and you will be required to deliver a high standard of care and provide support in accordance with individual support plans. You will encourage the people you support to reach their goals and aspirations, and you will also assist in developing strong links within the local community.
Supported living roles will require you to work weekends, bank holidays and unsociable hours.
Respite
The council have two respite facilities where people can stay overnight, for the weekend or sometimes for the week. This gives families some free time. Our aim is to provide consistent, caring support.
You’d be working on a rota, which includes early starts from around 6:30am, late shifts, weekend, and possibly sleeps.
Day services
The council run four day services, two in Wigan and two in Leigh, where people come to spend the day with friends and take part in activities they enjoy. The hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, making it a great option if you’re looking for a consistent weekday role.
Residential care
Within residential care there is a mix of council, but mainly privately-owned homes, and we work closely with all our care providers to make sure people receive the highest quality care.
There are also specialist mental health properties, offering support with medication and helping people stay connected in the local community so they can live their best life. Shift patterns vary depending on the residential setting.
Personal assistants
Personal assistants (PAs) are directly employed by the people they support. Hours can vary, you might be offered 5 hours a week or 5 hours a day, depending on what the person needs.
The role involves helping people get out of the house, enjoy their hobbies, and build their independence. Many PAs have two or three roles, and it’s especially popular with students looking for meaningful part-time work. It’s a brilliant way to gain experience for those studying health and social care.
We work with Embrace Wigan and Leigh (external link) to connect people with PA opportunities. If you are interested, we will pass you expression of interest into them.
These roles are rewarding, and you’ll build real relationships while making a positive difference in someone’s life and you will get a full induction and training to help you succeed.

Reablement roles aim to empower people to stay independent and confident in their own homes. The service works with individuals for a short period of time (up to 6 weeks depending on the level of need) to help individuals regain or maintain their abilities.
The team is growing fast and we’re looking for positive and upbeat people to join us. Join a dynamic, forward thinking team that is passionate about staff development, career progression and making a difference every day.

You’ll stay alert throughout your shift, ready to respond to any needs, incidents or emergencies. Your responsibilities will include updating support plans and documentation, administering medication safely in line with policies, and safeguarding people in line with Wigan Council’s safeguarding policy.
