Leigh awash with colour as the EUROs arrive

There’s only one place to start this week and it’s with the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 tournament.

The scenes we have experienced across Leigh on our matchdays over the last 10 days have been remarkable and we are thoroughly enjoying our role as tournament hosts.

At the time of writing, our three group games have been and gone awash with colour, excitement and, most importantly, a lot of goals at Leigh Sports Village.

The fan parades from Civic Square across to the stadium have been a particular favourite with Leigh turning orange last Wednesday with the Netherlands and blue and yellow at the weekend with Sweden.

It has also been a pleasure to host Portugal for all three matches and Switzerland in the opening fixture. The atmosphere in the fan parties has been fantastic with everyone contributing to that.

We can’t wait to welcome Sweden back for the quarter-final on Friday along with Belgium, who we are hosting for the first time.

Friday’s fan party before that fixture – the final one we will host – is taking place between 2pm and 6.30pm and I would encourage all residents to pay a visit.

With fun for all the family, entertainment along with plenty of food and drink options, the fan party is a free event and you don’t need a match ticket to visit.

Please call in, watch the fan parades set off for the LSV and relax in the sunshine.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our staff and volunteers who have made this possible, across the fan parties, at the LSV itself and everyone who has been working hard behind-the-scenes.

On a wider viewpoint, the tournament has been breaking down barriers and setting records already, let’s hope the Lionesses continue their good form and make it all the way to the final.

Our plans for the new facilities at Pennington Flash continue to take shape with a consultation event about the play facilities generating positive feedback and helpful suggestions.

They will all go towards informing our final designs.

Remember, if you couldn’t make it along then you can still take a look at our plans and have your say.
