A fitting tribute to our frontline workers

A fitting tribute to our frontline workers

Last year we announced that we would add a star to Believe Square and outside Leigh Town Hall to mark the contributions of our NHS staff and frontline workers who have worked so admirably during the pandemic.

We are delighted that we will unveil the plaques next week on July 5, to coincide with NHS Frontline Workers’ Day.

Throughout the past year we have regularly acknowledged the amazing achievements of those who have gone above and beyond in their roles, and we will continue to do so.

Their efforts and dedication will not be overlooked and this permanent honour in two of our town centres will ensure this.

While on the subject of our collective response to Covid-19, unfortunately our case figures continue to increase along with some of our neighbours across the city region.

We must all keep taking steps to prevent the spread by meeting outdoors if possible and keeping indoor spaces well ventilated with fresh air.

The 3Ws – wear a facemask, watch your distance and wash your hands – remain as important as ever and if you haven’t been vaccinated yet, please get in touch with your local GP.

We have seen in recent days vaccines are now being offered to all adults and there have been several pop-up vaccination clinics across the borough.

As part of our Recovery Strategy – which will help us refresh the council’s Deal 2030 masterplan – we will be asking you for your thoughts on important topics during the Big Listening Festival.

Our first focus is on communities and safety so please keep an eye on our channels to find out more and to see how you can get involved.

Throughout this year, the spotlight will move on to other subjects such as our town centres, culture and heritage, future workforces and transport.

Please have your say as these conversations will shape our plans as we emerge from the pandemic and work toward our build back fairer approach.

On a final note, it is fantastic that the new archive facilities at the newly renovated Leigh Town Hall are now open for the public and we have had some very positive reviews so far.

The exhibition spaces and art projects featured have helped transform the building, backed by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Places are available to book, for more information about what is available visit Wigan and Leigh Archives (external link) or contact 01942 404430.
