Bin day change on horizon for parts of Wigan Borough to ensure service remains fit for purpose

Waste collection days are set to change for residents in certain areas of the borough this October, following a thorough review of the council’s collection rounds.   

Less than three percent of the borough will be affected by the change, with letters and updated bin calendars sent to the affected residents in Higher Folds, Platt Bridge, Mosley Common, Siddow Common, Astley Green, Bedford, Golborne, and Standish. 

Councillor Paul Kenny, portfolio holder for planning, environmental services and transport, said: “99.9 per cent of our borough bins are collected on time each week by our dedicated crews who, come rain or shine, visit around 152,000 properties and clearing approximately 225,000 bins every week; the second largest population in Greater Manchester.  After a well-needed review of our waste collection routes, these small changes will make rounds are more efficient for our crews and more sustainable in the long term. By reviewing and balancing our collection routes now, we can maintain a reliable service, reduce unnecessary vehicle mileage, and ensure we continue to meet the needs of our communities for years to come.” 

As bin lorries have been covering more mileage and picking up more waste following the recent growth of our borough, a review was undertaken to ensure the collection service remains fit for purpose and can accommodate future demands. 

Bin collection rounds had previously not been reviewed in almost a decade, and the changes have been made to improve the efficiency and reliability of our rounds, whilst spreading the workload more evenly amongst waste crews and minimising the changes for residents.  

With the changes set to take affect from Tuesday 13th October, bin collection days will now take place a day later for residents in Higher Folds, Siddow Common, Bedford and Golborne.  

Meanwhile, households in Standish (near the Boars Head) and other residents in Golborne (near the driving range) will have their collection day earlier, while residents in Platt Bridge and Mosley Common will remain on the same day, but their bins will be collected in a different order throughout the month.  

Collection days will remain the same until the changed schedule is implemented in October, with letters and bin calendars explaining the changes in more detail for each household. If you have not had a letter, your collections will remain the same and so won't be affected by the reroute.
