New town centre safety orders come into effect

Wigan Council is introducing new orders to tackle anti-social behaviour in Wigan and Leigh town centres, including targeted powers against e-bikes and scooters.

These Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) will be in place for three years to support the police, council and other authorities in tackling a wide range of issues, reduce crime and help people feel safer in their communities.

This introduction follows an extensive review of previous orders and a public consultation held over the summer which gathered significant feedback from residents, businesses and the community sector.

Councillor Kevin Anderson, cabinet portfolio holder for Police, Crime and Civil Contingencies, said: “Residents, businesses and visitors all took part in our consultation, and it was clear that anti-social behaviour remains a concern.

“Most people who visit, live and work in our town centres do so responsibly, and these orders are aimed at addressing the small number of behaviours that negatively impact our communities, while ensuring support remains available for those who may be vulnerable.”

The orders prohibit several anti-social behaviours, with new powers to enforce against anti-social use of cycles, e-bikes and scooters, and drug-related litter and paraphernalia.

Councillor Anderson, added: “The council, along with the Wigan Borough Community Safety Partnership and its partners, will continue to adopt a balanced approach, combining enforcement with safeguarding and support, while ensuring Wigan and Leigh town centres are kept safe, welcoming and accessible for all.”
