New affordable homes set to be built in west Leigh
41 new affordable homes are being built in west Leigh, with Wigan Council investing in high‑quality affordable council housing for local residents.
Work on nine two to four bedroom new-build homes is already underway at Briar Grove, with eight bungalows set to be built at Yates Street. Nearby on Keble Grove, work will start later this year on 24 one-bedroom homes.
All of these sites are bringing brownfield previously developed land, back into use and will be delivering much-needed affordable homes in the borough.
Councillor Susan Gambles, portfolio holder for housing and welfare, said: “Since 2019, more than 2,100 affordable homes have been built in our borough. Around 680 of these are council homes.
“I am extremely proud that we are investing in building new council homes and we work proactively to build the right homes, in the right places for our residents. These three sites represent a good mix, with different home types and different sizes, delivering homes that we know local people want.
“These homes, all built as council homes at affordable rent, will also be built to a high quality, helping to keep energy bills down for tenants.”
