Historical Plantation Lodges open to all for the very first time
Plantation Lodges and Gates have opened following an extensive renovation period, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Wigan Council
The iconic Grade II* listed Lodges and Gates, located on Wigan Lane at the edge of Haigh Woodland Park, have been fully restored over an 18 month period by Wigan Council and were officially opened by Lisa Nandy MP, Secretary of state for culture, media and sport, on Friday, 3rd July.
Speaking at the event, Ms Nandy said: “This is Wigan, we are friendly, welcoming people who believe these assets are for us all forever. This is more than a beautiful restoration, it’s a bridge between our past, present and future. Places like Haigh bring us together.’
The opening was also attended by The Mayor of Wigan Borough, Councillor Anne Collins, and Councillor Nazia Rehman, Leader of Wigan Council.
Also in attendance was Councillor Chris Ready, portfolio holder for communities and neighbourhoods. Councillor Ready said: "It’s incredible to have Plantation Gates and Lodges restored and open to residents for the very first time. The reaction to the transformation and the artwork in the North Lodge has been amazing so far, we can’t wait for even more people to see the fabulous gateway to our woodland park".
Also in attendance was David Woods, a former resident who lived in the Lodges with his family over 50 years ago. He worked with local artists Leo Mercer and James Hooton, with his experience and memories forming a key part of 'What the walls remember'. This is an immersive art installation and a feature of the North Lodge, with options to choose from, all exploring Haigh’s history, people and stories.
The bespoke artwork has been designed and produced by the artists and their vision is brought to life through music, light and storytelling that offers viewers a unique opportunity to learn about the lodges and Haigh’s history and landscape.
Meanwhile, the South Lodge has been transformed into a visitor information space, along with bespoke furniture installation, floor tiling and an accessible toilet. Externally, the pedestrian gates have been sensitively restored and reinstated, and the wing walls on either side of the lodges have been repaired and rebuilt. External lighting which will allow themed lighting has also been installed.
The Lodges are open Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 2pm. Tickets are free, book Plantation Gates opening weekend tickets (external link).
