National playday gets bigger and better in Wigan Borough
Wigan Borough is going big on National Playday this week – meaning there’s more free family activities on offer than ever before.
Wigan Council is teaming up with community partners to make the nationwide annual celebration of play a celebration to remember.
In addition to a free family fun day at Pennington Flash on Wednesday 5 August, a host of community-run events are available across the borough.
This year’s theme is “Play – here, there, everywhere!” focussing on creating opportunities for children and young people.
The Leader of Wigan Council, Councillor Nazia Rehman, said: “National Playday is always a big date in our calendar here in Wigan Borough and this year is going to be extra special.
“Creating opportunities for young people is an integral part of our Progress With Unity approach and we can’t wait to welcome thousands of families to all the venues during the summer holidays.
“Helping our residents through cost-of-living pressures has also been at the forefront of our minds through our Here For You campaign and these events are free to enter, so please turn up and join in the fun.”
The Pennington Flash event is taking place between 11am and 3pm including an inflatable assault course, climbing wall, arts and crafts, scavenger hunts, family bike rides and more.
Many more community events are being supported by the council’s Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme with residents encouraged to check the schedule for what’s happening in their area.
Councillor Chris Ready, cabinet portfolio holder for communities and neighbourhoods, said: “We’re proud of our community connections here in Wigan Borough and National Playday is a great way to showcase what’s going on not just this week, but all year round.”
National Playday is held nationwide on the first Wednesday of August, promoting inclusive and welcoming spaces where children and young people can play freely and feel part of their communities.
